Getting started

brb blocks the apps you choose until you hit a daily step goal. Setup is: permissions, apps, goal, then walk.

Before you start

You need an iPhone, Apple Health for steps, and Screen Time permission so brb can lock apps. A 7-day free trial is available, and you can cancel anytime.

Setup

Do this once. After that, each day starts with your chosen apps locked at zero steps.

  1. Install brb from the App Store and open it.
  2. Allow Screen Time when iOS asks. Without it, brb cannot lock apps.
  3. Allow Apple Health / Motion access so steps can update.
  4. On Block Apps, choose the apps that actually steal the time.
  5. Set a daily step goal you have hit on a normal day.
  6. Turn on Strict Mode if you already know you will look for an ignore button.
  7. Remove overlapping App Limits or Downtime for those same apps in iOS Settings if locking behaves oddly.

What a normal day looks like

At midnight the step count for the goal starts over. Until you hit the goal, blocked apps stay locked. Walk, watch the ring fill, and unlock when you reach it. Miss the goal and they stay locked.

Questions

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. The iPhone can count steps on its own. A Watch helps when the phone is not on you.

What if setup fails?

Check Screen Time and Health permissions, remove conflicting iOS limits, restart the phone, then contact berightbackapp@gmail.com.
