Phone before bed

The night feed is not just lost sleep. It trains the same thumb that reaches for TikTok before your feet hit the floor.

Direct answer

Late-night phone use is linked with worse sleep for many people — brighter screens, stimulating feeds, and delayed bedtime. A practical wind-down (charging outside the bed, Downtime or a schedule, no social apps in the last hour) helps. brb does not fix sleep by itself. It changes the morning: chosen apps stay locked at zero steps until you walk, so the first unlock of the day is movement, not the feed you left open at midnight.

What to do now

  1. Charge the phone outside arm’s reach of the bed tonight.
  2. Turn on a Screen Time Downtime or Focus that covers your sleep window — or leave social apps off the Lock Screen.
  3. In brb, block the apps you open first in the morning and set a hittable step goal.
  4. Leave Strict Mode on if softer limits already failed.

What not to rely on

  • “Just one more video” as a sleep plan.
  • A Screen Time passcode you will type half-awake.
  • Raising the step goal before the night scroll is under control.

Why nights and mornings are the same habit

Doomscrolling in bed trains two things: staying up later, and treating the phone as the default next action. By morning the apps are one tap away and your step count is still zero.

Apple’s own Screen Time tools can quiet notifications and schedule Downtime. They still lose when you know the passcode. That is the same failure mode as daytime Ignore Limit.

A wind-down that does not require willpower at 1 a.m.

Pick one physical change (charger in another room) and one digital one (Downtime, Focus, or removing social apps from the first Home Screen). Keep it boring on purpose.

If you need an alarm, use a cheap clock or leave Phone Always Allowed while social apps stay blocked. The goal is fewer feed opens, not a dead phone for emergencies.

Where brb fits

brb locks the apps you choose until Apple Health reports your daily step goal. At midnight the day resets. Until you walk, those apps stay locked — including the ones you usually open from bed or from the pillow.

Emergency Unlock remains five minutes, once a day, for real exceptions. It is not a nightly scroll pass. Pair the night wind-down with a morning step gate if the first unlock of the day is the habit you want to break.

  2. Set Downtime or Focus for sleep hours.
  3. Block morning apps in brb.
  4. Set a step goal you can hit after you get up.

Questions

Will brb fix my sleep?

No. brb locks apps behind steps. Better sleep still needs a wind-down and less late feed time. brb helps the morning half of the same habit loop.

Should I block apps overnight in Screen Time and in brb?

You can use Downtime for sleep and brb for the step unlock. Avoid stacking conflicting App Limits on the same apps — see the conflicting Screen Time settings doc.

What if I need the phone as an alarm?

Keep Phone and Clock available. Block the feeds, not the tools that wake you up.
