How many steps a day do you need?

10,000 steps is a round marketing number. Research points to meaningful benefits well below that — and a walk-to-unlock goal only works if you can hit it.

Direct answer

Large observational reviews in The Lancet Public Health and JAMA associate higher daily steps with better health outcomes, with much of the benefit appearing by roughly 5,000–8,000 steps for many adults — not only at 10,000. Exact targets vary by age and study. For brb, pick a daily unlock goal you already hit on a normal day (often 5k, 8k, or 10k), then raise it once the habit sticks. A goal you never reach teaches you to hunt for a bypass.

What to do now

  1. Check your average steps in Apple Health for the last week.
  2. Set brb’s goal near that average — or slightly under — so unlock is earned most days.
  3. Use the daily step goal calculator if you want a suggested number from your average.
  4. Turn on Strict Mode only after the goal feels hittable.

What not to rely on

  • 10,000 as a medical commandment. It is a round target, not a hard threshold from those studies.
  • A brb goal copied from a friend who already walks twice as much as you.
  • Skipping days and raising the goal at the same time.

What the research is actually saying

A 2022 Lancet Public Health meta-analysis of international cohorts found mortality risk fell as steps rose, with the curve leveling around roughly 6,000–8,000 steps per day for adults 60+ and around 8,000–10,000 for younger adults. A JAMA analysis of U.S. adults linked about 8,000 steps versus 4,000 with substantially lower mortality risk in that sample. A 2025 Lancet Public Health dose–response review similarly found clinically meaningful associations around 7,000 steps versus very low counts for several outcomes, with benefits continuing to accrue at higher counts for some endpoints.

These are observational associations, not proof that a specific number will change your personal outcome. They do undermine the idea that only 10,000 “counts.” More steps generally track with better outcomes up to a point; the biggest jump is often leaving a very low baseline.

Picking a number for walk-to-unlock

brb’s job is different from a longevity study. The unlock has to be real most days or you will look for Ignore Limit energy somewhere else. Start from the steps you already take. 5k is a valid unlock if that is your normal Tuesday. 10k is fine if you already clear it.

Once the morning rule sticks — apps locked until the ring fills — raise the goal. The research supports moving up from sedentary baselines; it does not require you to jump from 3,000 to 10,000 on day one.

How brb uses the number

You choose the apps. You set the step goal. Those apps stay locked until Apple Health reports the goal. Strict Mode closes the casual ignore path. Emergency Unlock is five minutes, once a day, for real exceptions.

The science can inform how ambitious to be. The product still wins or loses on whether the goal is hittable and the lock is honest.

Setup checklist

  1. Open Apple Health and note your typical daily steps.
  2. Set that number (or a little below) in brb.
  3. Block the apps that steal the morning.
  4. Walk. Raise the goal after a streak of hits.

Questions

Is 10,000 steps required?

No. Reviews in The Lancet Public Health and JAMA associate benefits with lower counts for many adults. 10,000 can still be a stretch goal if you already walk a lot.

What step goal should I put in brb?

One you can hit on an ordinary day. Use your Health average, or the daily step goal calculator, then raise later.

Does walking more always mean better health?

Higher step counts associate with better outcomes in large studies, with diminishing returns at the high end for some measures. Talk to a clinician for personal medical advice — brb is an app lock, not a treatment.
